Solidarity to End War on Sexual Crime against Children in Indonesia

4.335 cases of sexual violence occured in 2011 reported by National Women Commission (KOMNAS Perempuan) and other 395 organizations working for providing legal and technical assistance to children victim of sexual violence. Moreover, it is more suprisingly that 2.937 cases of sexual violence under category of rape, abuse, attempted rape, forced abortion, sexual exploitation, prostitution and pornography, took place in public arena.

National commission of children highlights that the number is increasing in 2012. Pusaka Indonesia Foundation has reported that 218 cases of sexual violence against children happened in Medan. 234 cases in South Sumater province,24 cases in Nganjuk, 24 cases in Central Java. If we look at the number, you may question "why".

From the experience of organization working on providing assistance to children victim of sexual violence, i take some important point to explain "why"?

Firstly, sexual violence against children is taboo to talk. People believe that children is innocent, therefore they should be treated as innocent creature. When rape or other sexual violence happen to their children, they are either denial or silent. (More)

Secondly, children has difficulty to express their traumatic experience on sexual violence. On the other hand parents do not have sufficient knowledge on sexual violence, especially when it is happening  to their children. Moreover, police is also not really trained well in handling rape case. As a result, there are many unsensitive questions addressed to victim subjecting to double discrimination and harrasement. for instance "how do you feel when you were raped?, for children, it is difficult to get answer, because children may not answer the questions.

Thirdly, Lack of culture of respect to women and children. Some parents believe that beating is part of education children. How many of us ever shouting, beating, slaming, ignoring, etc to our children? How many of us really aware that our culture is accepting bulling in private and public? This cannot be accepted. This must be stopped NOW. When we use violence to our children, it is similar that we teach our children to use violence in dealing with problem.

How to stop this? You and me must hand in hand to stand for the war on rape and any other sexual crime. When sexual violence happen to our children, neighbor, friends etc, practical thing can be done is REPORTING to the police, IDENTIFYING the characteristic of preparator because when one child got rape or sexual violence then there must be another children also experience the same thing. LOVE the victim. They are need support and more love in order to deal with traumatic situation. PROVIDE sex education for children to teach them about the function and consequences of reproductive organs and also to teach them to respect to their own body and their friend's body.

MOBILIZING support from wider network to end rape. On 9th Janury 2013, deep sadden from Indonesian people and 80 Civil Societies expressed to Solidarity Night for Children Victim of SExual Crime was held in Gedung Perintis Kemerdekaan Jakarta. This is just one thing to involve in the call War On Rape.
